"The easiest way to think about it is responsiveness in the front of the shoe, and comfort in the back."
MATT NUZZO, footwear manager - NEW BALANCE

The Drive Zone

The Drive Zone is an area in the forefoot where high concentrations of pressure should be applied when performing baseball-specific movements. It's a uniquely textured area of the insert that provides a mental reminder of where players should be driving from.

The Drive Zone

4040v3: The Making Of A Top Flight Cleat

It takes hours upon hours for companies to develop a new pair of cleats, and when the player tries them on for the first time, that same pair is often judged in a matter of seconds. Are they comfortable? Flexible? Do they provide enough stability and cushion? New Balance went to great lengths when designing their L4040v3 cleats so players could answer “yes” to all those questions, and a critical part of that research and development process happened in their sports research lab.

New Balance brought in athletes of all levels—professional, college, high school, Little League—and placed custom inserts in their shoes that allowed them to capture underfoot pressure while these athletes performed baseball-specific movements: hitting, pitching, throwing, etc. They could then see where across that insert pressure was being applied, where it wasn’t, and in what concentrations. That gave the innovation and product teams at New Balance the data needed to design what would be the foundation of the L4040v3.

They discovered that the highest areas of pressure occur in the forefoot, which they refer to as The Drive Zone. So when designing the insert for the L4040v3, they wanted to make that portion more responsive. They accomplished this by placing an uninterrupted, untouched piece of foam at that location. Meanwhile, in the heel, extra foam was added and placed on a sculpted-out part of the midsole, giving the player softness on top and breathability/flexibility on the bottom. In a way, this insert, also called New Balance's Data-Driven Platform, is intuitive: it knows your movements before you’ve even stepped foot in it.

When you’re playing the game at a high level, you probably don’t think much about the top-flight cleats you're wearing, how they're helping you, or what it takes to engineer them. And that’s how it should be. A cleat like the L4040v3 is doing its job if you’re not focused on it. If it’s feeling and performing exactly the way you expect it to, so you’re free to focus on the game and what you have to do to help your team win. It’s nice to know that someone else is thinking about it though, isn’t it?

What Are The Measurements Between New Balance Shoe Sizes And Widths?
Width: There is approximately a 1/2" difference between widths (2A, B, D, 2E, 4E) and a 3/8" difference between 4E and 6E width. This difference occurs across the ball of the foot and is the maximum difference in width. There is less of a width difference as you move toward the tip of the shoe and toward the heel.
Length: There is approximately a 1/6" difference between each half size (i.e. between 9 and 9.5 and between 9.5 and 10, and so on). For every half size up, the width (across the ball) will increase by 1/8".
Men's Shoe Sizing Guide
When ordering New Balance shoes, please order your normal athletic shoe size. If the majority of shoes you own fit adequately, consider ordering a standard men's width (D). If your shoes tend to feel overly spacious in width, consider a narrower width (B or 2A). If your shoes tend to feel noticeably narrow or snug, consider selecting a wider width (2E, 4E, or 6E).
Feet swell during the day, and we encourage you to try on your shoes later in the day when your feet are at their largest. New Balance shoes are made to fit directly out of the box and do not need to be broken in. Your heel should fit snug with no slipping. The midfoot of the shoe under your arch and over the top of your foot should be snug but not tight. You should have enough room in the toe box to wiggle your toes. If your feet are "between" sizes and you cannot decide which to suggest, choose the larger size. You can make adjustments for a better fit with socks, insoles, or a different lacing pattern.
Have your feet measured every year because people are more than twice as likely to buy a shoe that is too small than too big. Clues that your shoes are too small or narrow include noticeable foot cramping or "falling asleep" while running (or just after running) and the formation of blisters and calluses between or on your toes.
If your new shoes feel tight, remember that feet typically get bigger with age. Your left and right feet may differ in length or width by as much as a full size. Measure and try shoes on both feet, and always buy shoes to fit your larger foot.
